Exercising Your Dog on a Road Trip

Ways to Exercise Your Dog on a Road Trip

Hello Guys! As many of you know I recently went on a road trip with my family from Minnesota to Kansas City. This was a big mile stone as this was River’s (my sister) first official out of state road trip.

One thing my humans were worried about is making sure River got enough exercise on our trip. I know what your thinking, it’s only a 6 hour trip from Southern Minnesota to Kansas City, but we wanted to make sure this trip was a success. And that meant making sure River was able to get all her wiggles out.

As we were driving to Kansas City, I started to think what were some of the options to exercise your dog on a road trip that is fun and adventurous for all. Here is my list of different ways to exercise your dog on a road trip or any day for that matter.

Visiting Dog Friendly Shops

Visiting dog friendly shops is a lot of fun for both dogs and their humans. This is a great way to escape the weather, work on socialization, and the humans get to shop!

We don’t have a Bass Pro Shop close to us, so when my humans found out they are dog friendly, my dad jumped all over this stop. Inside this shop there were real ducks swimming in the pond, we made sure we steered clear of the water fowl. However, enjoyed the huge fish tanks.

Dog Park

Many bigger towns and cities have enclosed dog parks that are a great way to allow your dog to run off leash, as well as socialize.

There are so many different and fun places to go for a walk or a hike on a road trip. Here are some ideas:

  • State Parks
  • National Parks
  • Down Town
  • Road Side Rest
  • Anywhere!

Sight Seeing

Sight seeing is my favorite way to get exercise on a trip. Finding unique places in new cities to explore and take pictures is lots of fun for all. Most outdoor places are dog friendly, but it’s always best to double check.

While in Kansas City, MO we visited the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art the home to the world’s largestv shuttlecocks. Unfortunately, we forgot our badminton racket.

Tennis Court

On our trip we were trying to find a dog park but couldn’t figure where it was. Needless to say, River needed to stretch her legs off leash and just run. We found a park that had two enclosed tennis courts in it. My humans made sure there wasn’t any signs saying “No Dogs Allowed” and unleashed us! This was a perfect area to exercise us, no only was it big enough to play fetch, but it offered a non-muddy place to run.

If a wet dog is something you don’t mind, swimming is a great way to exercise your dog. Different places where a dog can swim is:

  • Lake
  • Ocean
  • Dog Park
